“Love Hurts” (2025) is an action-comedy that tries to capitalize on Ke Huy Quan’s undeniable charisma and martial arts prowess, but it stumbles under the weight of an uneven script and tonal inconsistency. Quan shines as Marvin Gable, a realtor with a hidden past as a hitman, forced back into a world of violence when his former partner Rose (Ariana DeBose) resurfaces with vengeance on her mind. The film delivers slick, well-choreographed fight scenes—particularly a standout kitchen brawl—that echo Jackie Chan’s playful scrappiness, showcasing Quan’s physical agility and charm.
However, the comedy falls flat with sparse jokes, and the romance between Quan and DeBose lacks chemistry or narrative depth, leaving their connection unconvincing. Daniel Wu’s crime-lord brother adds menace, but the convoluted plot and excessive exposition bog down the 83-minute runtime, making it feel longer than it should. Despite Quan’s valiant effort and some fun action beats, “Love Hurts” doesn’t fully harness its potential, settling for a middling mix of thrills and camp that’s entertaining but forgettable. Worth a watch for Quan fans, less so for those seeking a cohesive story.
