Review

Surface Season 2 trades San Francisco’s sunny haze for London’s brooding fog, elevating the Apple TV+ thriller into a sharper, moodier beast. Gugu Mbatha-Raw returns as Sophie (now Tess Caldwell), a woman with amnesia chasing the truth behind her mother’s death, linked to the shadowy Huntley clan. Mbatha-Raw is phenomenal—her steely resolve and raw vulnerability carry the show, especially as Tess claws through high society with a sleek bob and a vengeance-fueled edge.

The season ditches Season 1’s meandering pace for a tauter narrative, blending Hitchcockian suspense with noir flair. Newcomers like Phil Dunster (a reckless Quinn Huntley) and Millie Brady (an enigmatic Eliza) add spark, though Oliver Jackson-Cohen’s James feels underused until late twists. The visuals—opulent estates, rainy streets—dazzle, and the mysteries (stolen millions, a childhood tragedy) unfold with satisfying jolts, even if some threads (like Freida Pinto’s Grace) get short shrift. It’s not flawless—pacing dips, and the finale’s cliffhanger screams Season 3 bait—but this is Surface finding its footing, delivering a compulsive, stylish ride that finally justifies its slow-burn roots.
