Harbin is a 2024 South Korean biographical period drama film directed by Woo Min-ho, starring Hyun Bin as Ahn Jung-geun, a prominent Korean independence activist. The story unfolds in 1909, a time when Korea was under Japanese rule. Ahn leads a group of resistance fighters in a daring mission to assassinate Itō Hirobumi, the Prime Minister of Japan, who is traveling to Harbin, China, for diplomatic meetings.
Ahn’s leadership is questioned by his fellow fighters due to his decision to release Japanese prisoners, including the ruthless Commander Mori Tatsuo, who later massacres many of Ahn’s comrades. Determined to redeem himself and strike a blow against Japanese rule, Ahn orchestrates the assassination plot. However, the team faces numerous challenges, including a mole within their ranks and relentless pursuit by Japanese forces.
The film culminates with Ahn successfully assassinating Itō at Harbin railway station, shouting “Long live Korea!” before being captured. Ahn is later hanged in 1910 for his actions. Harbin explores themes of patriotism, sacrifice, and the struggle for independence, highlighting the complexities and hardships faced by Korean freedom fighters during this tumultuous period.
