Synopsis
Unfrosted (2024) is a satirical comedy loosely based on the true story of the invention of Pop-Tarts. Set in 1963 Michigan, it follows the fierce rivalry between breakfast giants Kellogg’s and Post as they race to create a revolutionary shelf-stable, fruit-filled pastry that could dominate the market. Bob Cabana, head of development at Kellogg’s, discovers that Post has advanced a product originally developed by his former co-worker Donna “Stan” Stankowski. Kellogg’s rehires Stan from NASA to help develop their own version, assembling a quirky team of “taste pilots,” including industry icons like Tom Carvel and Jack LaLanne.
Amid corporate espionage, sugar shortages, and interference from a powerful milk syndicate, the team faces absurd challenges, including sentient ravioli and mascot strikes. Political tensions escalate with references to the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the product’s name is humorously changed from “Trat-Pop” to “Pop-Tart” due to a misreading.
The film blends historical events with outrageous fictional elements, culminating in the Pop-Tarts’ explosive market success and a tongue-in-cheek epilogue questioning the story’s veracity
