Synopsis
Mary (2024) is a biblical epic that traces the life of Mary, mother of Jesus, from her miraculous conception to the birth of Jesus and the subsequent flight from King Herod’s deadly pursuit. After years of praying for a child, Joachim and Anne are blessed with Mary, whom they dedicate to God’s service at the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Mary grows up devoted to her faith, serving in the temple until her teenage years, when she meets Joseph and becomes betrothed.
The angel Gabriel visits Mary, announcing she will bear the Son of God, Jesus. Facing suspicion and hostility from her community, Mary and Joseph marry and go into hiding as Herod’s paranoia grows. When Jesus is born in a Bethlehem stable, Herod orders the massacre of male infants, forcing Mary and Joseph to flee to Egypt with their newborn.
The film portrays the political and social turmoil of the time, highlighting Mary’s courage, faith, and maternal love amid danger and rejection.
