Synopsis
Mothering Sunday (2021) is a British romantic drama set in post-World War I England. The story follows Jane Fairchild, an orphaned maidservant working for the wealthy Niven family. On Mothering Sunday, Jane is given the day off and is invited by her secret lover, Paul Sheringham-the son of neighboring aristocrats-to spend the day with him at his empty family estate.
Their passionate affair is complicated by class divisions and the looming reality that Paul is engaged to another woman, Emma Hobday, out of social obligation. After their intimate encounter, Paul leaves for a family lunch, only for Jane to later learn of his sudden death in a car accident.
The film interweaves Jane’s grief and her journey toward becoming a writer, exploring how this formative day shapes her identity and future relationships, including her marriage to philosopher Donald.
