Review
The Brothers Sun Season 1 is a wildly entertaining blend of action, comedy, and family drama that hits the ground running and rarely lets up across its eight episodes. The series follows Charles “Chairleg” Sun (Justin Chien), a Taipei triad enforcer, who travels to Los Angeles to protect his mother, Eileen “Mama” Sun (Michelle Yeoh), and clueless younger brother, Bruce (Sam Song Li), after an assassination attempt on their father, Big Sun (Johnny Kou). What unfolds is a high-octane mix of martial arts mayhem—highlighted by jaw-dropping fight choreography—and laugh-out-loud moments, like Bruce’s improv antics clashing with Charles’ stoic killer vibe. Michelle Yeoh shines as the steely, secretive matriarch, though some fans might wish for more of her signature action (she gets one standout fight).
The cultural specificity—mah-jongg games, churro obsessions, and Taiwanese triad intrigue—adds depth, but the plot occasionally stumbles with tonal whiplash and a late-season conspiracy twist that feels overstretched. Still, the cast’s chemistry, especially Chien’s breakout turn and Li’s endearing awkwardness, makes this a binge-worthy gem. It’s not flawless, but it’s a fresh, fun ride that leaves you wanting more—too bad Netflix canceled it after one season.
