Synopsis
The Inspection (2022), directed by Elegance Bratton, is a deeply personal drama inspired by the filmmaker’s own experiences. The story follows Ellis French (Jeremy Pope), a young, gay Black man who, after years of homelessness and estrangement from his mother Inez (Gabrielle Union), enlists in the U.S. Marines in 2005 seeking purpose and acceptance. At boot camp, Ellis faces relentless hazing and abuse, particularly from the hard-edged Gunnery Sgt.
Laws (Bokeem Woodbine) and fellow recruit Harvey, after his sexuality is revealed in a humiliating incident. Isolated and targeted, Ellis finds an unexpected ally in instructor Rosales, who encourages him not to give up. Despite brutal treatment and emotional turmoil, Ellis perseveres, gradually earning the respect of some recruits and instructors.
The film climaxes with Ellis’s graduation, where a brief reconciliation with his mother is quickly shattered by her continued rejection of his identity. Ultimately, Ellis finds a sense of belonging among his fellow Marines, even as his quest for maternal acceptance remains unresolved
